The third major reason that marijuana should be legal is because prohibition does not help the country in any way, and causes a lot of problems. There is no good evidence that prohibition decreases drug use, and there are several theories that suggest prohibition might actually increase drug use i.
One unintended effect of marijuana prohibition is that marijuana is very popular in American high schools. Because it is available. You don't have to be 21 to buy marijuana -- marijuana dealers usually don't care how old you are as long as you have money. It is actually easier for many high school students to obtain marijuana than it is for them to obtain alcohol, because alcohol is legal and therefore regulated to keep it away from kids.
If our goal is to reduce drug consumption, then we should focus on open and honest programs to educate youth, regulation to keep drugs away from kids, and treatment programs for people with drug problems.
But the current prohibition scheme does not allow such reasonable approaches to marijuana; instead we are stuck with 'DARE' police officers spreading lies about drugs in schools, and policies that result in jail time rather than treatment for people with drug problems.
We tried prohibition with alcohol, and that failed miserably. We should be able to learn our lesson and stop repeating the same mistake. Prohibition does not work. Education and treatment are better ways to address the drug problem. There are plenty of other reasons why marijuana should be legal. Just to name a few: People need to stop putting the blame of heavy drug users onto this harmless plant. No one wants to take responsibility for their actions and own up to their mistakes; everyone looks for the scapegoat.
To this day, I have not heard an intelligent argument against the legalization and regulation of cannabis that cannot be quickly dismissed or refuted. Most politicians, I would assume, are worried that supporting this controversial subject would yield negative feedback from their supporters. The public has gotten it into their heads that legalizing marijuana is the same as condoning it, which it is not. The fact is, many people would outlaw fast food, cigarettes, alcohol, and tanning beds because of the harm they cause.
But this is America, and America is about freedom and about choice. Give the people in our nation the choice to enjoy marijuana which is not nearly as dangerous as those four things I just mentioned without the fear of prosecution or criticism. In these economic times the government should be looking for ways to create jobs, produce ongoing revenue, and increase morality of its citizens.

A new study seems to undermine the assumption that cannabis is primarily consumed by young people. A new Denver study shows that crime is down and tax revenue is up after cannabis legalization. A new California study has determined that the presence of MMJ dispensaries does not affect cannabis use in teens.
Home Advocacy Naturally, I had to write about marijuana! TheWeedBlog Editor 4 days. TheWeedBlog Editor Aug You would have to look through some analytical data I don't think there's any that is this current but all the trends…. Marijuana is a drug that is illegal in the United States.
This drug as you know is bad and causes severe side effects to your brain and body. Marijuana has both short term and long term effects. However, according to scientific experiments, marijuana is known to be beneficial in medicine. The question is should marijuana be legalized? One of the consequences of legalization will be a tremendous increase in drug users.
Right now, drug users have fear of law enforcement agents, but if drugs were to be legalized, they no longer will have fear and will feel that it will be okay to use drugs.
Over twenty years ago, estimates of drug use among Americans went as high as 24 million, but we now estimate that the number of Americans who use illegal drugs is down to about 11 million. And a recent study done by my office shows that Americans are spending less on illegal drugs, not more. This decline is due to more officers on the streets and drug awareness programs. An increase in drug use will result in an increase in drug related crimes if drugs are legalized.
Supporters of drug legalization believe that crime and violence would decrease if drug use was legal. Statistics tell us that almost half of those arrested for committing a crime test positive for the use of drugs at the time of their arrest.
Making drugs more readily available could only propel more individuals into a life of crime and violence Brown Also drug users turn to crime to pay for their habits because they are stimulated by drugs and therefore act violently.
